• Is there any promise for me to believe or hope for?

Outline: Solomon’s instructions to his son are applicable to all young men and women. In the Old Testament, the laws of God were the content of instructions in the family. When a father insists on “my teaching” as in v.1, he is actually referring to the law of the Lord. How much do our problems today have to do with our unfaithfulness to the laws of God?

Rather than teach the laws to our children, we have often substituted the school and social media for home as the venue for all instruction on how to live. Yet, in some countries, religious education is limited or even prohibited. Consequently, there are growing generations without knowledge of the law of God. They rely on what they think they know, rather than trusting in the Lord (v.5).

Note the benefits of trusting God (v.8). What can we learn from vv.9–10? Our natural reaction to any form of discipline or hardship is resentment. However, when we submit to the discipline and teachings of the Father, there are great rewards (see vv.13–18).

⁂ Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
