Scripture Union Daily Guide 8 May 2020 Outline

In this text, David lodged his complaints to God about the ruthless attacks launched on him by his enemies. They attacked him with lies and hateful words and fought against him for no reason. He loved them, but they hated him in return (vv.2–5). This had seriously affected his health (vv.22–25).

In vv.6–20, he singled out one particular enemy, and requested God to punish him for his bad deeds. Satan is our enemy. His strategy is to destroy and kill (John 10:10a; Job 1:13–22). He is the accuser of the brethren (Revelation 12:10). He attacks our mind, body, will and heart. He also works through people and other beings to attack God’s people.

David in his petition hands over the enemies into God’s hand. He requested that God should deal with them and save him from their hands. It is interesting that despite the enemies’ wickedness, David showed love and did good to them (vv.4–5).

We are also enjoined by our Lord Jesus Christ to love all people including our enemies (Matthew 5:43–48). We should not allow anxiety about anything including our enemies to control our lives (see Philippians 4:6).
